Hi people !
Today i am gonna share a little bit philisophical ie. spiritual subject with you guys. If there is any reading my posts that is =X .
Anyhow I once came across this book called The Power of Now by this author by the name of Eckhart Tolle. I saw this book when I was visiting my friend at his place while browsing through what books he had on his collection on his table.
Somehow i took up the book and begun browsing through.... it was like the book was calling out to me. Could be my imagination i dunno. ha. But ya the title caught my attention a little as it kinda linked to a book i read a few years before that, Zen O'clock by Scott Shaw. Zen O'clock is a very small book that discussed things like the present moment and listening to our hearts which I find very insightful. It was my first book i ever purchased from bookstores other then school textbooks for my school education too.
I thought the Power of Now will be a good add on to my knowledge bank as well as enlighten me on things i do not know that i do not know, as well as things i should know in order to live my life with clearer purpose. So I asked if i could borrow it from my friend for a couple of weeks and he agreed.
The Power of Now covered somewhat topics like what is the meaning of life, what is our purpose here on earth etc. to things about understanding our mind that is not us, not the true self living within us. That if the mind goes on un-watched, could very well and have since jeopadized the lives of many who did not or have not discovered this important knowledge.
I shall jump right in to share with you a portion of what I learnt from the book / the author. I do hope you find it interesting and maybe go download the free e-book that can be found by clicking on the links i provided below.
Some principles I learnt or understood.....
1) Our mind and our true self are 2 separate entities. Many have this misconception that we are actually our Mind! Do not be fooled by the Mind. It wants you to think that it is you and you are it. Ok so how do you recognize what thoughts that comes to you is the true you or by your mind? The key take away here is not to think of your mind as an enermy but to know how to make it work for you, instead of against you. See the key characteristics of the Mind below:
- He judges. ie. John is fat. Peter is stout. Simple things as such. Passing of judgement, be it good or bad ones. That include things like judging ourselves etc.. Very much of these are on a subconcious level.
- He loves to create drama in our lives. Instead of walking safely down the stairway, it may make you fall off it to reach ground level instead? How abt a love triangle =] such are the works of the mind that has successfully controlled us or others to create dramas in our lives etc.
- He loves to compare. ie. He is richer than me... I am much better looking. She is so much more sexier than me. How does it make you feel when you compare? That's what your mind loves to do. So are you in charge or is he incharge..
- He likes to project into the past or the future but never on the Present. How do you usually feel when you think about an past event? Or something that has yet happen that might not happened? Is it usually positive or negative? What happen when you use your present moment to relive and feel what you felt in the past or something that has yet happened? very simply, your present moment that is the forever of Now, the only moment that you truely know you are alive and exist to experience the new n freshness of what is, is taken away because of what you allow your mind to make you think the way it thinks.
- He holds internal conversations in your head. See people walking out there screaming at the top of their voice and talking as if there is really someone there? It's simply a severe case of an external projection of what goes inside the head. Those 'people' we term as 'lost their mind'. It's more of the other way round whereby their mind have fully taken control of them. As such these people are like zombies, living dead.
- The Mind thinks endlessly. Have you ever wished you can stop thinking sometimes but didnt know how to? It's not you. It's the mind and how it works. The way to stop it, just be aware and concious that it is not you. Detach yourself from the identification with the mind and you will be free. When you do that, your precious present moment is returned back to you. Not only can u breath with great relieve, u conserve energy for the long run.
- Lastly the Mind thinks about negative things 60% of the time.
The real / true you, is always at peace, and fully present. When you are constantly in the Now / the present moment you experience true lasting Joy, Peace and Love. There will no longer be a need to have this or that (attachements) in order to feel gratified. Ie. cravings like sex, choc , meat, lust or ice cream. The cause of pain in life is attachment. For example what happens when someone throw away a diamond ring that your bf gave you? Because of identification with the ring that it is part of us or belong to us, creates emotional baggage. Something like a false sense of security or happiness.
We must accept that nothing lasts forever. You and I don't last forever. Everything is as temporary as life. One moment you are happy and the next, in deep anguish or sadness. But eventually it will come to pass. One fleeting moment will come after the next until you begin to live in the present moment.
Acceptance sets you free. Begin accepting things for the way it is, in it's perfect inperfectness and thou shall be set free and feel light as a feather...
Peace...
